For Immediate Release

On Tuesday, February
16
, human rights and
environmental activists,
members of the
Indonesian-American
community and others will
gather in San Francisco,
California, to urge
Indonesia's President Joko
"Jokowi" Widodo to make
justice a priority of his
administration.

Demonstrators will gather in
silence from 5:30 to 7:30
pm
in front of the Palace
of Fine Arts Theatre,

3301 Lyon St, San Francisco,
CA 94123, where the
President is scheduled to
speak, They will call for
greater efforts to bring to
justice those responsible
for past and ongoing human
rights violations.

"President Widodo took
office pledging to break
with the past. Instead, we
see too many echoes of
Indonesia's lawless past,"
said John M. Miller,
National Coordinator of
ETAN.
Peter Phwan of ICANET, a Bay
Area Indonesia-American
group, said "Jokowi should
keep his campaign promise
for commitment of human
rights. So far, he has
disappointed us."

"The persecution of
religious minorities
continues. Churches still
burn and minority faiths
still have trouble getting
permits to build houses of
worship. This was the
pattern of the past
administration."

Recently Jokowi's own
officials made hateful
remarks against gays and
lesbian, even banning gay
emoji (sticker) in apps such
as Whats App, Facebook and
Twitter. Jokowi must address
this minority rights," he
added.

"Repression of
West Papuans demanding their
rights is ongoing, despite
Widodo's promises of change.
Security officials recently
censored efforts to discuss
the brutal killings that
began in 1965 and brought
the U.S.-backed dictator
Suharto to power, Miller
added. "Suppressing
discussion is characteristic
of authoritarian
governments."

"Victims and survivors of
human rights crimes from the
1965 mass killings to the
illegal invasion and
occupation of East Timor
(Timor-Leste) and the war in
Aceh still await justice,"
said Miller. "The lack of
accountability for the past
contributes to lawlessness
in the present."Other issues of
concern to the demonstrators
include the continued
cutting and burning of
Indonesia' forests to
establish palm oil and other
plantation agriculture. The
rate of deforestation is
among the worst in the
world. Much of this logging
is illegal, often
facilitated by lax
enforcement and corrupt
military and police. Haze
from the burning of forests
in Indonesia affects the
health and well-being of
millions in several
Southeast Asian countries

Development projects
such as the land reclamation
such in Benoa Bay in Bali
threaten Indonesia's coasts
to build hotels and golf
courses.

Groups
organizing the protest
include the East Timor and
Indonesia Action Network (etan.org),
ICANET, and California
against Reclamation in Benoa
Bay, Bali.

BACKGROUND

1. Indonesia must reveal the
truth and provide justice for
past human rights violations
from the mass killings in 1965
on to the illegal invasion and
occupation of East Timor

It is 50 years since Suharto's
1965 seizure of power and 40
years after Indonesia's illegal
invasion of East Timor
(Timor-Leste). During Suharto's
decades in power, Indonesian
security forces and their
proxies killed hundreds of
thousands. Indonesia has taken
only halting steps to
acknowledge these crimes against
humanity and has yet to take
serious steps to hold those
responsible for the crimes
committed throughout the
archipelago from Aceh to
Timor-Leste (East Timor) to West
Papua. Many of those responsible
maintain powerful positions,
including in Widodo's own
political party and
administration. Refusing to
acknowledge the past, the
Indonesian military is
increasingly re-inserting itself
into domestic affairs.

2. End the Persecution of
Religious Minorities
Religious minorities in
Indonesia remain under threat.

The recent burning of churches
in Aceh and bans on Ahmadi
worship are among the most
recent examples. Followers of
minority religions continue to
face persecution and to have
trouble opening houses of
worship, including GKI Yasmin
and HKBP Philadelphia churches.
Many localities enforce
discriminatory regulations in
violation of national law.

3. End the Persecution of
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender
people

Public officials have made a
series of troubling anti-gay
statements, urging barring LGBT
people from universities and
other institutions. Recently,
the Communication and
Information Ministry threatened
to ban gay and lesbian emoji or
stickers in WhatsApp, Facebook
and Twitter.

Signs are being readied for October 28 demonstraton.

4. Stop Human Right

Violations in West Papua

While Jokowi has promised a new
deal for Papua, many of those
promises remain unfulfilled.
About 40 political prisoners
remain in jail and the rules
governing media access remain
murky. West Papuans advocating
for freedom face harassment,
arrest or worse. Expanded
"development" projects threaten
indigenous rights and
livelihoods. Indonesia continues
to rebuff appeals for direct
dialogue with the independence
movement.

5. Protect the Environment, Stop
Deforestation

Indonesia's forests continue to
be stripped to establish palm
oil and other plantation
agriculture. The rate of
deforestation is among the worst
in the world. Illegal logging is
often facilitated by lax
enforcement and corrupt military
and police. Haze from the
seasonal burning of forests in
Indonesia affects the health and
well-being of millions in
several Southeast Asian
countries. Plans to add
additional coal-fired electric
plants also pose health hazards
and will contribute to climate
change that already threatens
Indonesia's coral and coasts.
The massive Benoa Bay
Reclamation Project would
destroy a large conservation
area in Bali for hotels and
tourism.

MEDIA ADVISORY

AKSI DIAM MENGINGATKAN JANJI HAM
PRESIDEN JOKOWI

SEGERA

Pada hari Selasa, 16
Februari 2016, aktivis Hak
Asasi Manusia (HAM) dan
lingkungan hidup serta
sejumlah warga Indonesia di
di Amerika Serikat melakukan
aksi diam di San Francisco,
California, mendesak
Presiden Joko Widodo untuk
memperhatikan isu HAM dan
keadilan sebagai prioritas
dalam pemerintahannya.

Aksi diam ini dilakukan
pada jam 5:30 sampai 7:30
petang di depan Palace of
Fine Art, 3301 Lyon Street,
San Francisco, CA 94123, di
mana Presiden akan bertemu
dengan komunitas diaspora
Indonesia di AS. Aksi diam
ini menyerukan agar Presiden
Jokowi melakukan upaya
serius untuk mengadili
pelaku pelanggaran HAM masa
lalu dan kini.

"Presiden Jokowi menjanjikan
pemerintahan yang berbeda
dengan masa lalu. Tetapi,
kita melihat begitu banyak
gaung pelanggarana hukum
masa lalu,“ ungkap John M.
Miller, Koordinator Nasional
ETAN.

Peter Phwan
dari ICANET di San Francisco
mengungkapkan,“Jokowi harus
memenuhi janji-janji
kampanyenya dalam Nawa
Cita”. Salah satunya janji
Jokowi adalah komitmen
terhadap HAM. Sebegitu jauh,
rekam jejak HAM pemerintahan
Jokowi masih mengecewakan.

Muhamad Amin, aktivis
San Francisco lainnya
berkata, “Belakangan
sejumlah fraksi DPR semakin
mendukung Jokowi. Agar
terjadi check and balance,
Presiden Jokowi perlu
diingatkan soal isu HAM
ini."

Phwan
menambahkan, "Penganiayaan
terhadap kelompok minoritas
agama, seperti kasus GKI
Yasmin, HKBP Philadelphia,
Syiah dan Ahmadiyah masih
berlangsung.” Gereja masih
dibakar dan kelompok
minoritas agama masih sulit
memperoleh ijin untuk
membangun tempat ibadahnya
sendiri. Ini adalah pola
pemerintahan masa lalu.

Baru-baru ini beberapa
menteri di Kabinet Jokowi
mengungkapkan ujaran
kebencian terhadap kaum gay
dan lesbian. Bahkan,
melarang emoji (stiker) gay
dan lesbian di aplikasi
seperti WhatsApp, Facebook
dan Twitter. “Jokowi harus
memberi pernyataan soal
perlindungan HAM terhadap
minoritas ini”, ungkapnya.

"Orang-orang Papua Barat
masih juga menuntut
hak-haknya, meskipun Jokowi
menjanjikan perubahan.
Pejabat di bidang Politik
Keamanan baru-baru ini
melakukan upaya sensor
dengan melarang diskusi
masyarakat tentang
pembunuhan brutal yang
terjadi di tahun 1965 yang
memungkinkan berkuasanya
Soeharto, diktator yang
didukung AS, ujar Miller.
“Pelarangan diskusi adalah
gaya pemerintahan otoriter”.

"Korban dan
penyintas kejahatan
pembunuhan masal 1965 sampai
invasi ilegal ke Timor Timur
(Timor-Leste) dan
pelanggaran HAM di Aceh
masih menanti keadilan,
“kata Miller. Lemahnya
pertanggungjawaban terhadap
masa lalu punya andil
terhadap pelanggaran hukum
di masa kini.

Isu
lain yang diusung para
aktivis adalah pembalakan
dan pembakaran hutan
Indonesia untuk perkebunan
kelapa sawit dan hasil
pertanian lainnya. Tingkat
penggundulan hutan Indonesia
adalah salah satu yang
terburuk di dunia. Ini
karena adanya penebangan
hutan secara liar,
seringkali dipermudah dengan
lemahnya penegakan hukum dan
militer serta polisi yang
korup. Asap dari kebakaran
hutan di Indonesia jelas
mengganggu kesehatan dan
kehidupan jutaan orang di
beberapa negara Asia
Tenggara.

Proyek-proyek pembangunan
seperti reklamasi Teluk
Benoa untuk pembangunan
pusat pariwisata jelas
mengancam kelestarian alam
dan pantai di Bali.
